Profile

Kennes + Elegeert architecten is a Belgium based architecture firm, established in 1980 by Koenraad Kennes and Elisabeth Elegeert after graduating in architecture from the Saint-Luc Academy in Brussels. They worked on complex architectural commissions in difficult, often historical and protected areas.

In 2016 their daughter, Sybil Kennes, joined the practice and became partner one year after. After completing a Master degree in Science of Architecture at the Henry Van de Velde Academy (University of Antwerp), she went to London for an internship at 6a architects. Returned in Belgium she worked for the artist duo muller van severen.

Over the years the family business developed a mature body of work, mostly reconversion projects, turning cultural heritage into nowadays museums, schools, care institutes and residences. Today the company is known for their artistic approach. They tend to use pure and genuine materials and combining ecological solutions with timeless aesthetics. The aim of the architects is to understand the narrative of each building and search for a meaningful sequel.

Projects usually start with a talk to define the program. The architects than work on a feasibility study and master plan. When the planning permission is obtained, they produce all necessary plans and tender documents. They follow up the building-site. Projects are delivered ready-to-use with customized interiors.
